From the Field
to the Table
Sweet Onion Timeline:
The PA Simply Sweet onion starts as seed in a local greenhouse or field grown in warmer climates. This is where the beginning stages of the sweet onion will take place.
The Transplant:
After the seedling begins to sprout, it is transported to the fields, where they will be transplanted in soil around mid March to be harvested at a later date.
Growth:
After being transplanted in mid March, the PA Simply Sweet onion will remain in the ground maintaining steady growth until harvesting begins.
The Harvest:
Harvesting can begin as early as the last week in June and will continue through the middle of July. The farmer then harvests the sweet onion, where they will make their way to the warehouse to be dried and stored at
appropriate temperatures.
How to Spot the Good Ones
Sweet Onions are a great variety that you can eat right off the shelf, because the onion packers grade their onions so strictly, it's hard not to pick a good one and you're always in for a treat.
Here are a few pointers to selecting the perfect PA Simply Sweet onion.
Drying:
The onions are transported from the field to the warehouse, where they are placed in wooden bins to dry in appropriate conditions for seven days to cure.
Grading:
After the onions are properly dried, they are strictly graded for size and imperfections. Before packing begins, each farmer sends their onions to a lab, where they are tested for sugar content.
Packing:
After all specifications and qualifications are met, the sweet onions are packed in cardboard boxes, marked with the registered trade-mark, Pennsylvania Simply Sweet(R) onions and transported to the PA distributors for you and your family to enjoy.
